Be the Best You

Last Sunday was a big day for me as I finally completed a goal I’ve been working on a for awhile-I ran my second half marathon and completed with a personal record. The feeling of crossing that finish line while my daughters and husband cheered for me (aside for almost throwing up!) was amazing! I did it.


I think it’s easy for us to look back on these big moments as defining times in our lives but the truth is, it’s the journey there that usually makes us who we are. This was not my first attempt at a second time doing a half marathon. I had hoped to do one the year before but with commutting, my oldest daughter adjusting to being in school, and not enough time (or energy) in the day I did not get enough training in. I made the choice to be there for my family instead of taking the time away from them to train. I didn’t regret my choice my felt like I’d let myself down. Over the next year I’d make other tough choices in order to put my family first.

Fast forward to 5 months into 2018 and life looks a lot different. I am finding a sense of balance. I am recognizing it is ok to have seasons where some life goals get out on hold. That doesn’t mean they are getting tossed away-just making gathering a little bit of dust for now. And maybe there are a few life goals that are ready to come off that shelf! For me, it was time fur that half marathon and all the training that came with it. It’s been a time to write more, reflect more, and sort through the physical clutter in my home.

We are all just in this world trying to make the right choice, one step at a time. All we can do is do our best and be ok with what our best self is for that day, this season.

The day after my run when my 4 year old ran out in the hallway with a headband on telling me she was “winning the race,” gave me all the confirmation that today I was doing my best for not only myself but for my family.


Now it’s your turn-what is that goal you have ready to dust off and give a go? Or maybe you have too much on your plate and need to put some things aside. I’m here to tell you it’s ok to not do it all. Be the best you, that you can be.
